Black & Jewish in the News

The seed, Yoseph Robinson, is germinating already.

His untimely death has definitely put Black and Jewish on the map. The NY Times wrote a piece on the topic.

Now its up to us, the living ones, to prune and work it for the general good. Bezrat Hashem (with the help of G-d)

The above article is very negative and victim-insistant. lol.  There is another side and I feel its important that WE -the Black and Jewish people- must be the ones to show that side. Most people would have a need to keep up in the victim status mold, the nebech, the problematic mold.

It's not just us, there is a core group that needs many many victims to uplift their non existent self esteem. But because its non existent, no amount of victim will ever be sufficient. C'mon gang, lets beat our own iron while the fire is hot!!!

Obama Coming to Israel

Its bad enough we have Natanyahu (lol), now US Pres. Obama wants to come to Israel too?!

I thought he doesn't "do" Israel. Not enough dhimmis here. Who still believes in these talks anyway?

No! Stay away! Go away! keep Out! Do Not Enter! Do Not Disturb! Closed! No Thru Traffic!  Take Left! In fact, take the left with you! Come to think of it, take all the politicians with you!

Let's see what we can do...

Yoseph Robinson's Killer, Nabbed!

May Yoseph's blood be avenged.

They knew each other. What did he think, a "brother" had no value?!

A beloved Brooklyn liquor store clerk gunned down last week knew the ex-con accused of killing him.
Eion Klass, charged with the murder on Wednesday, used to smoke cigarettes with Yoseph Robinson and lived just three doors down from the crime scene. "He liked Yoseph," said Emre Erkan, the super of the building on Nostrand Ave. where Klass lived with his girlfriend.
Abraham Silverberg, 45, of Brooklyn, said the shooter used to come into the liquor store where Robinson worked every Thursday night for winetasting.
"We're so shocked. We can't believe this is the same man," Silverberg said.

Mild Rant: Kids w/a Need to feel Powerful

Please forgive me, but I have to get this off my chest.

But how come when my kids play with a certain (white) group of kids, they always play some sort of police game in which my kids get arrested and tied up? Is that normal? Should I not be worried? They always seem to be on a power trip, I feel, but it could be my own distrust seeing too much...

Yoseph Robinson -A Jamaican Jew Passed Away

Baruch Dayan Emet /Blessed be the True Judge.

What a sad loss.

Neshama News

.Saving the world over the weekend?
First it was the United Arab Emirates ambassador in Washington, now it’s a Saudi Arabian editorial, and John Bolton says the entire Persian Gulf feels the same: an attack on Iran is the only option - if it's not too late. (INN)

Many countries are waiting for Israel to bomb, infiltrate, do something with Iran before they complete the enrichment of their uranium (to the point of weapon grade -er- I mean to have increased power for their ....reactors). And what, pray tell, would be Israel's consequences for "saving the world"?

August 21 is supposed to be the deadline. This Jewish year is 5770 (Sept 2009 -Sept 2010) and its going to end with the Jewish new year (Rosh Hashanna).

Personally, I don't want war. I want Rosh Hashanna!!

Yep. Lots of things are going down these days. Russia and their fires, Pakistan and their floods, not to mention all the many volcanic eruptions and earthquakes (terrestrial and financial) that happened this year. Many will be quick to say, "Ah! its because those people are...idol worshippers, immoral, or whatever else that makes us feel better and deserving of good, while they are deserving of bad.  Just shut the door of the ark behind you and don't give a care that the world is in turmoil?

Rather we can take to heart that these are signs that we are not alone. There is a Shepherd.  The Homeowner is in the house.  A plane can fall right out of the sky and have only one reported death.  These things are all miracles. Hopefully, we will see the godliness in these things, pray for ourselves and the world in general,  and turn to the Creator and perhaps even effect things for the good....

But if you don't wanna, there 's always the Jews and Rosh Hashana. This date is, according to Judaism, the time when the world is judged. So the least you can do is prompt a Jew to get up and go pray on that day (in a nice way, of course!). Pray for the world as we must.. At least that way you partake in his merit for praying.

And while your at it, hear the shofar blowing, the ram's horn.

Speaking of judgment day, If you haven't already, please vote for Gina McCauley's panel at What About Our Daughters by August 27. Her talk /panel will be Cybercrusading for Women: The Rings We Will Not Kiss. Check out her blog for more info!It can't hurt to have more positivity for women out there.

More judgment: Dr. Laura Shlessinger, known for her no nonsense parenting advice announced her stepping down from her long aired radio show after mishandling a Black women caller who sought sympathy against her husband's indifference to white population's racist ways towards her.  Apparently, she repeated used the "n" word! What was she thinking?

At some point "tough love" can get too rough it seems. A bit more sensitivity would have been better. Sensitivity, compassion for the world is very needed. Lesson: Perhaps we can all at least begin to save the world over the weekend just by being a bit nicer to someone else.

Water, Water: Cordoba House

Just to give the link context, Rabbi Akiva gave guidance as to what to do when attempting to enter paradise. He said do not  think for a moment that there are two, multiples. God is One. When you see the water Above and the water below, do not say, "water, water" its all really one.

Jewish End of Days blog has a neat piece on the Cordoba house. Those wanting to build the Cordoba house near GZ (the GZ Mosque) and the fact that Muslims are requesting to be able to pray at the Cordoba Church in Spain (it was formerly a Mosque).

Oh wait a second, no such thing as coincidence, right?

Beautiful Children?

There are three types of relationships. The Bland but Holy (BBH), the Desirous but Unholy (DBU), and the Desirous And Holy (DAH). This is with the subject and an other person, or thing, or idea, etc., all manner of relationships.

In the BBH relationship, the subject is trying to do the right thing. They don't really have the desire for it, but because of peer pressure or some other outside force, the subject submits. They make their marriage vows, consumate the marriage....but....oh well.  I think a perfect example of this type of relationship output would be....

Jane meets Mike. Everyone tells them they are the perfect couple. He has money. She has looks and family name. So, they shrug and marry. The offspring they would produce may lack some spirit.

Then, there's the DBU relationship.  Here the desire is strong and powerful. Desire and Will comes from whatever it is which is are very core. In other words, this is coming from a very high level of the person --nevertheless, because it lacks holiness, it is flawed.

Jane is not happy with Mike and Mike is not happy with Jane. They are soooo different. Jane, sensing that the guise is falling from their relationship, closes up.  Soon Mike's eyes begin to roam. He finds a very spirited Lisa. Lisa desires Mike and Mike desires Lisa. They make a secret rendevous. The offspring this relationship produces may be beautiful, but may lack an appreciation for goodness.

And finally, there is the DAH relationship. Both desire and holiness are in effect. The perfect combination! The near highest level of the person -his Will- is involved in this, and they are doing right by God above.

Jane is fed up and officially divorces. Mike and Lisa get burned in some freak accident and are out of the picture. Jane shakes away all the peer pressures and finds who she really loves--Doug. Luckily, Doug loves Jane as well.  They marry and lived happily ever after. The offspring they would produce should be beautiful and talented.
All this reminds me of the story of Asa'el from King David's army. He was said to be able to run so fast, that his feet was not seen touching the ground.  He almost flew! The Holy Zohar attributes this talent to his parents actually desiring each other and coming together in holy matrimony.

There are alot of messages for BW to open their eyes and notice other, non-Black men. I think that is important. However, if your heart is not there, then don't fool yourself. Life is not simply mechanics. Chemistry counts for something too.

(This is very simplified and is not the whole story).

I Am My Beloved's, and My Beloved is Mine

Its the month of Elul at the moment. The letters the word "ELUL" are the acronyms of the phrase, "I am my Beloved's, and my Beloved is mine!" Its a love month. A month were God puts on His Holy Jean pants and comes and shmoozes with us in our living rooms (so to speak).

Let's talk to Him. Reflect upon His many miracles....why, He still breathing life into us from way way back when since the time of Adam and nu?! Thank Him. lol.

Seriously, though, we have much to be grateful for and personally, I think its much better to look at the beautiful things that's been given to us and feel loved and gratitude and try to be better people because of that, rather than to fear His wrath, look with doom upon those who are having misfortunes, and chastise everyone for not repenting completely enough.

Bring on the K'doosha! Holiness in Dancing

Once, when I first entered a seminary in Jerusalem, the whole school was invited to a wedding so I came along even though I didn't know people so well yet.

At the wedding there was lots and lots and lots of dancing -as is usual for a Jewish wedding. However, there was one girl there.....I don't know what she was doing but her dancing was out of this world! Her movements were so graceful and  went so well with the music, her expression -it wasn't silly happy nor angry, it was just very focused. It was just mezmerizing!

Later on I came up to her and said, "I don't know who you are, but I sure hope you can dance at my wedding!!!"

8 months later I got engaged and she did dance at my wedding!!! Thank God.

7 years later, I went to another wedding and I saw another girl dancing with that grace, ease of movement, focusedness. It sends chills down my spine!

Dancing in holiness can actually destroy an evil decree from on High. It can also bring sustenance, bounty, goodness down to where we are.

It involves lifting one foot and then the other, moving the hands, the body. Almost every culture has their own dance move  (that reminds me of how each of the 12 tribes had their own prayer method and Heavenly gate that the prayer entered that the other tribe didn't have). I've seen the Ethiopians and their shoulder dance -I wonder what power does that hold? The Yemenite and their fancy steps? Congolesians and their sway? and I suppose even the American square dance has something! (And imagine if all the dancing around the world was all a united act of bringing sustenance to the world?)

Unholy dancing --dancing to degrading lyrics, dancing to lure someone into a trap, just plain gyrating to rouse perverted thoughts - that also has a power. It brings down a consuming fire. Such as in the case of Nadav and Avihu.

What happened to them?

The Hebrews came out of Egypt and were so drunk with happiness to God for saving them, for revealing so much of Himself, they cried out "We will do, and we will hear!"  (Exodus 24:7) The doing before the hearing?! They were ready to do whatever God asked before even hearing what he wanted.  Nevertheless, that is an indication of how in love we can be to God. A precursor, hopefully, to how things will be (and an explanation for all those new age-y people who think love is all that is needed).  However, for the here and now, fear is also needed in order to temper our acts of love to the Holy One lest we get consumed by the fires of our love.

In the case of Nadav and Avihu - they had much to be grateful for. Their family was made priests (Cohens), their father was the high priest (Cohen gadol. the big kahuna). And they had the privilege and the opportunity to bring incense offering before Him at appointed times and He would "take in" the incense. What a miracle to perform and to behold!!! To be a part of this exclusive act was beyond the imagination.

Well, they had much to be grateful for and they were drunk with love. People can become in love with God (or things, or people, or other gods, etc) so much so that they can barely contain themselves, they may do things -in the name of love- that are wrong, innaproriate, intrusive, or even dominating in their gusto to show their love. This is why we have "measures".

Character traits are called "measures" in Hebrew (middot). Because these measures give us the boundaries in which to express our love -how much measures of anger do we express when we are hurt by a loved one, how much measures of giving is appropriate, how much measures of refraining when helping our beloved baby to walk, and so on and so forth. Without the proper measurements, things go awry, people get hurt, damage happens.

In the case of Nadav and Avihu, its recounted that they literally got drunk, all that wine drinking impaired their judgement and they went in an inapproriate time to bring the incense. This brought down upon them the "consuming fire" that destroyed them. Things were not done in their proper measurements, in their proper time, way, etc., and as a result an unholy fire consumed them.

Nadav and Avihu is compared to the right leg and the left leg -according to Rebbe Nachman. They had the wrong motive, the wrong measures, and thus was consumed by an unholy fire.

In conclusion, dancing is a powerful tool -as most things- to serve God with, to help ourselves with. But like most everything else, it must come from a properly measured motive. Otherwise, with the wrong intent, the wrong amount of measurements and we can get consumed and lost in our own desires, drives, lust or what have you (God forbid). May we always think a moment and gauge ourselves and the proper measurement to be used in all our actions. And may we dance a holy dance and bring goodness in our lives!!! Amen.

A Muslim

Only because these things won't get reported....

There is a heatwave going through Israel. Thank G-d. What else can I say.  Anyway, I realized that at some point I do have to take the kids out. So, I did. We trudged through the blazing heat. I paid a bill. The kids played around. Then we went back home which was uphill.

While pushing the stroller up I saw a religious Jewish man also with a stroller. His was a double stroller. And, as kids are wont to do, one of the kids took off her visor hat that threw it to the sidewalk. The man tried to let go of the stroller to get the hat but quickly realized the stroller would roll down the hill if he let go. As he stood there wondering what to do, a fully garbed Arab lady has walking by.

As she walked by she swoops down and picks up the hat and hands it to the man and keeps on walking. Priceless.

In Tsfat we are preparing for the klezmer festival. There will be lots of music playing, lot sof musicians panning their CDs, lots of kyosks selling trinkets and what not. The other day, the kids and I passed by one of the stages that was being prepared. There was a young Arab or Druzy (not sure sometimes) boy about 18 years old who was painting the stage wall, etc.  He had been working hard and was sweating. And he had nothing to drink -there is a heatwave nowadays. As I passed, he ask, "Do you have some water?"

I didn't.

I felt bad and asked if he'd like me to go to the store for him and get some water. He said no so I went home. But it bothered me. He's obviously thirsty and maybe too shy to put me out of my way. But at the same time I don't want to be too forward in this very conservative society. When I got home I asked Mr. BFWF if he would bring that kid a nice bottle of water. I filled a bottle w/water and ice.

The Plunger

It was a regular morning. I was making oatmeal and fruits for the kiddlings. Mr. BFWF went out to get a new plunger because once again the kids threw wipies down the loo. And this time, the plunger broke as he tried to send it all down the drain.

When he returned he showed me the new plunger.

Unexpectedly, I shivered.

I didn't expect that reaction from me but somehow this scene threw me back to way back when when the Fine guys in blue in NYC sodomized a hapless Haitian man (Abner Louima) inside a jail. They thrusted a plunger into him. It happened long ago and many may have forgotten this story -I did. Until I saw the plunger.

Keeping quiet as the whole family ran upstairs to watch Papa deal with the bathroom, I wondered if I wanted to share this ugly memory with Mr. BFWF. **sigh** The hardship and suffering people endure. Its a wonder. Its a wonder we are all still sane.

Remember Lard?

Remember those good ole days of cooking eggs with butter? Of frying things with lard? those saturated fat. Well, these days those products- and anything else that has saturated fat-  got such a bad rap - the threat of heart disease!!! or worse!!!!- many people avoid these things like a plague.

Well, I'm not a nutritionist, so I can't tell you what to do, but here is some food for thought...

First from wikipedia on Saturated fat:

Saturated fat is fat that consists of triglycerides containing only saturated fatty acid radicals. There are several kinds of naturally occurring saturated fatty acids, which differ by the number of carbon atoms, ranging from 3 carbons (propionic acid) to 36 (Hexatriacontanoic acid). Saturated fatty acids have no double bonds between the carbon atoms of the fatty acid chain and are thus fully saturated with hydrogen atoms.

And here is a Dr. Sally Fallon and Mary Enig's article: excerpt
Dr. Mary Enig, a nutritional biochemist, argues that we are now obese because we stopped eating saturated fat. She makes these points....(you can read the rest at Nourished Magazine).

Again, I am totally not a nutritionist, so I am not telling you what to do. Just to weigh the information rather than gobble up what the mainstream media is feeding us (we already know how quick they are willing to bad rap BW, let alone the entire black community. Why wouldn't they have an agenda ($$) when it comes to marketing food and dietary pushes?).

So, what's causing folks to be overweight? What's the non-politically correct answer?

It seems that the main culprits are sugar (which includes corn syrup) , white flour (which drains away whatever vitamins and minerals we take in), trans fatty acids, and overly processed foods (which damage the body).

Again, I'm not a nutritionist, and sorry to say, research all on your own is necessary. Nobody will have a quick answer for anything and the lazier one is, the more dependent we are on other's info.

Feeling Good?

Hello my dear readers!
I am just taking some time to make sure you are all feeling good. The majority of my posts have been directed towards BW with the express intent and hope that they/you realize, understand, and embed within their/your hearts that they/you have value. A divine spark. And that G-d Himself is rooting for you! Its most crucial that you understand this well enough that the information becomes not a "belief" but a "knowing", like knowing that one typically has five fingers on one hand, so too, BW have a divine spark of holiness and purpose in the world.

Anyway, once that is established, there are much much more places to explore, to talk about, to enjoy!!!

Please do what you have to do, read what you have to read, learn what you have to learn but just get this message inside you.

Funny, U Don't look Jewish?

Quotable Quotes

"Most Israelis are here because they fled from Muslim and European countries. They don’t feel that either of those blocs have the right to lecture them about anything. Why should a country where your parents were expelled or killed have the right to tell you how to conduct yourself in a war against people who are trying to kill you today? This is something hardly any non-Israelis understand. They don’t understand how galling we find this."

Something odd about this......

Anyway that's the least of my worries, the Lebanese border is flaring up w/gun smoke.

NAACP Alternatives - Somebody's gotta start

Okay, over and over we get stories of how the NAACP have thrown BW under the bus. Is the most we can do with this information is to shake our heads and then allow ourselves to get distracted? Can we have some long years as well as length of days? Can we learn something and make a permanent change in commemoration of what we've learned rather than just give the day a big "wow!" in some comment section and continue with the regularly scheduled program?

How about some NAACP alternatives?

Five Ketyusha Rockets hits Israeli City

Five Katyusha rockets hit the city of Eilat on Monday morning. According to police, two exploded in open areas and three fell into the sea. No injuries were reported.

Residents of the city reported hearing loud blasts at approximately 8 a.m.

Jordanian officials reported that a rocket hit Aqaba as well, exploding next to a local hotel. Four people were wounded.

More on that story here.

Its been a while. A hot minute of peace. At least its been 10 years since a lynching.

The Israeli Border

Running to Israel by Khalid Abu Toameh.

Okay, I'll let you read it for yourself. The only thing I might add is, if the Israeli government don't buckle -they always seem on the verge of buckling to international pressures- I think it won't be just Arabs and Africans running to Israel.

Enough said.

Brave Move, Brazil!!!

Most are probably not aware or just don't care about Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani, an Iranian woman arrested on charges of adultery while married and sentenced to stoning.

Sakineh's son, Sajad, is doing everything he can to save his mother's life and recently there was a major breakthrough. Brazil's president, Luiz InĂ¡cio Lula da Silva, has offered to take Sakineh into his country.

"I don't think Iran can ignore Brazil as easily as it ignored other countries," Ashtiani's son, Sajad, told the Guardian today. "It is very important that Brazil, as one of Iran's most significant allies in the world, has offered a haven for my mother."

He hoped Turkey, which also carries influence with Tehran, would add its voice. "No countries in the world can have such impacts that Brazil and Turkey can have on Iran now. These two countries can save my mother's life," said Sajad. ( The Guardian)

An offer of asylum by one if Iran's few friends. How can Iran turn this down?

We'll see how this pans out.

Good Wholesome Movie

Seriously, why is it so hard to find a nice, non-sexually charged, Black main character movie for kids?

Oh, and with a positive theme. Am I asking too much?
